About me pages are tricky things to write. Here goes...
I'm Camilla and I live in London. Hello!
If you've stopped by this site, it's probably because you've read one of my novels. My first novel was Illicit Magic, which is now the first in the Stella Mayweather series, a sometimes dark urban fantasy tale of a young woman who discovers she's a witch. My other series is a fantasically fun mystery series about an office-temp-turned-PI called Lexi Graves, who isn't a very good PI to start but she's determined. While it's funny, it's not slapstick, so hopefully you'll laugh with her rather than cringe at her. I like to write my heroines as brave, resourceful and able. My heroines don't wait around for a man to rescue her, she's got to figure it out for herself... though she'll take an appropriately placed rescue with grace.
I started out as a traditionally published author with non-fiction books, in the education/ self-help field, and have a background as a books editor for a publishing company where I looked after print and ebooks. Prior to that I spent several years as a freelance journalist writing for the likes of The Independent, The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, woman&home, Easy Living, and Scarlet. I've also written extensively online, including for AOL, several Guardian blogs and was a freelance editor for several years for Shiny Media, running Britain's top wedding blog. (I used to have nightmares about wedding dresses.) I also write sparkling ad copy. Sparkling, I tell you.
As for indie books, I caught the bug when I was gifted a Kindle. I then proceeded to read more books on it in two months than I had in the whole of the previous year. I was hooked. It was around about this time that a former colleague published his book to Kindle and I realised, hang on, maybe I could do that too. Then someone on a LinkedIn group linked to an article about Amanda Hocking, the paranormal romance author who was making big waves. I realised quickly the self-publishing route was rapidly becoming de-stigmatized, largely in part to Kindle, and an actual option. Hooked twice. So I decided to experiment... Since then, my books have all featured on the Top 100 genre (including contemporary fantasy, romantic suspense and women sleuths) bestseller lists and are regularly tipped as "hot new releases".
As for me personally, well, I love reading (handy), writing (very useful), and riding rollercoasters (not particularly useful). I'm learning how to ski and can horse-ride, though don't get to do these as often as I'd like. I love movies, have a gsoh and enjoy moonlit walks hang on, it's not like we're dating. Music wise I like rock, indie, goth, but my iPod is quite eclectic, and I play a mean game of Gin Rummy. You've been warned.
If you want to get in touch with say, you are welcome to contact me via my contact page.
Don't forget to sign up for my newsletter too - it comes out once a month, at the start of the month, with other updates if something particularly exciting happens, like a new book release.
Have a magical day!
Camilla
